2006 S40 - shuts down when braking, key won't come out

Post by headsets »

Hello,

I have an S40/2006 model year, and it shuts down intermittently when breaking. When this happens the car shuts itself off completely and the key becomes locked into the ignition and will not come out for about 10 minutes.

I tried searching online, and thought it might be the ETM (electronic Throttle Molecule) but wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts.

Other than this issue, the car is in great shape, and runs well, just not sure what to do about this.

Thanks for any help!

This post is limited in information, shuts down when braking should be explained.
Questions would be..
Does it have to be driven for a while?
Is shut down immediate when applying the brakes?
Is shut down immediate when applying the brakes and hasn't been driven yet?
Was there a piece of equipment installed before this happened?

On this model, two issues have come up and suggest you have a certified technician diagnose with VIDA.
One issue is the steering lock module, fails and no starting (at times the steering wheel is locked and instrument warning message)
Second issue is the ignition switch, there is an updated switch. (generally a no start error and instrument warning message)
Third issue was a CAN connection that a rodent caused. The wiring was made into a meal, shorting the harness where the damage was and sent a shut down message via the network when the brakes were applied.
Actual data can be read using VIDA. A smart technician would follow the brake message within the network.
Fourth issue was the ABS control module. Very rare but when the brake signal was applied and the ABS recognized the message, the ABS control module shorted the CAN transceiver.
