My 1998 v70xc has thrown a P410 and I'm totally baffled. I started out checking the system at the solenoid located at the top of the radiator. When the engine starts, it does not open. I checked the voltage at the connector and it's only 8.5 volts. If I run a jumper right from the battery to the solenoid, it does open. Must be that 8.5 volts is not enough to open it. I think the SAS relay only is for the air pump itself and the signal for the solenoid come from the ECU, but I could be completely wrong on that. Is it normal that this voltage be low? Engine was "cold", but it was pretty hot outside when I tested it. Don't know if that makes a difference.
TIA
Rob

Wow, thanks, I'll try that. Maybe I'll buy two and put one in my Saab to fix the evap code that keeps coming up.
I got 25 of them on eBay for about $2.50. Pm your address and I will send you a couple. Its an easy fix and worked well for me. I was a little intimidated at first, but it is an easy fix that allowed me to pass inspection. The CEL has been off for a week or so now.

OK, I'm still baffled. I did the diode fix and so far, no codes posted for 100 miles. However, I can't seem to get readiness set. The sections it didn't set are SAS and O2.
I tried the procedure in TSB 25-19. May not have followed it exactly to the letter. From my house to the next traffic light is about 4 1/2 minutes at 45 mph, so I had to stop before 6 minutes. I also can't guarantee that I kept the tach between 1800 and 2200 the entire time.
Is it possible that the mod is affecting the ability of the ecu reading the last two monitors, or did I mess up the readiness drive?

These cars are notorious for taking forever for monitors to be ready. I recently had an EVAP leak that I fixed before my inspection. I commute 45 minutes to work, city and highway, and am constantly on the go and it was not ready for two weeks - I checked ever time I got in.

My 1999 takes over 300 miles to set EVAP. I eventually researched and found the EPA allows you to pass an emission test with up to 2 monitors not ready. My state, NY, honors this policy. Check with your state DMV for compliance. I passed inspection in May with EVAP not ready.

JUST PASSED! Maryland makes you wait a week before a retest, so in that time, it came up ready. I went to the test shop armed with MD-VEIP documents stating that certain cars, including mine, were waived from the readiness requirement. It also stated that all cars 2001 and up can have one monitor unready, and 2000 and below, two monitors. They said that was dropped a few years ago. Now they free extensions for retest.
Here's what I don't get. The ECU drops fuel trim settings any time a monitor fails, including SAS. As soon as I did the diode fix, my mileage jumped from 19 to 22. So I figure that on an average drive, I was wasting 15% of my gas. That seems like it would have more environmental impact than slightly higher cold start emissions. I think they should have designed it not to reset fuel trim for SAS failure.
