98 V70XC Weird Noise Behind Dash

Post by jmana »

Can anyone identify what this noise in the video is caused by? It's really beginning to annoy me. It doesn't seem to be dependent on engine speed or blower speed. It's just a constant noise that seems designed to annoy the crap out of me.

I bet the ECC is flashing the AC and recirculate lights when you start the car.

That's a damper motor that's stuck. If directly behind the glovebox, it's the recirculate motor flap - sometimes the arm falls off. If it's lower in the dash tunnel, it's one of the temperature flaps.

My temperature damper would randomly get stuck, and going to full hot, then back to set AC temperature would shut it up for a while.

That IS really annoying. On the 98, you have a damper for position, two for temperature (left/right) and one for recirculate/fresh. Sounds like the recirc damper to me.

Yep, you're right, the lights do sometimes flash so that must be what it is. Anyone have a link to a good repair?

Hopefully you won't find that the plastic arm has split.

I have been working on a repair for that. Maybe next few weeks.

Switch the system to REC and see if it stops.

I'm pretty sure this video will show you the location of the motors.

I tried switching to rec and it didn't stop. But the odd thing is it doesn't make this noise all the time, and the lights don't flash all the time, so it must be an intermittent thing. I guess I'll have to tear into it and see what's going on :(
