2009 XC70 rear centre seatbelt sensor
2009 XC70 rear centre seatbelt sensor
The rear center seatbelt, retraction device, electronic sensor and gas chamber assembly appears in perfect order but as soon as the rear seat is folded down or right rear seat is occupied it causes the belt to retract even slightly thereby setting off a malfunction warning to the dashboard: "SRS Airbag service urgent" warning. Code warns driver's side pressure sensor fouled, the rear center seatbelt traction device fouled. Disconnecting the wiring harness and reconnecting at least removes the "Warning - immediate service required" message but does not get rid of the red airbag/seat belt icon warning. To remove this icon requires a computer reset from a repair shop and about $100 (nearly twice amount that from the dealer). As soon as the seat is folded down or a passenger sits on the right rear seat the cycle repeats. Is there a solution besides a new $250+ part, plus $100 computer reset, plus who knows what other charges will come along, for such a non-sense sensor malfunction? Thank you.

The wiring would be far more likely the cause. The driver's pressure sensor is in the driver's front door and the retractor/tensioner in inside the rear seatback. IF the wiring under seat was getting pushed into something and grounding it it might be a shared circuit for power supply with the pressure sensor and affects diagnostic tracking for both.
Hi,
Thank you for your suggestion. I don't think its the wiring because all it takes is for the seat belt retraction device for centre seatbelt to be pulled, including while folding the rear seats up or down, and there goes the warning message again. Once I disconnect and reconnect the wiring harness the "Urgent Service required..." message goes away and doesn't start each time the ignition is turned on but the red SRS balloon on the dash stays put until it is cleared through the computer.
I've been told that as long as the red SRS balloon warning light is on the airbags won't deploy in an accident.
Any other suggestions short of spending $250++ part?
Thank you

Can any enthusiasts specializing in Volvo electronics explain what is happening as far as the wiring harness between the seatbelt retraction device and probably the computer? Don't see how or why the rear centre seatbelt would have anything to do with airbags. Is the circuit open or close or is it far more complex? Thanks!
