98 V70XC Control Arm Bolt Removal

Post by jmana »

I need to replace the control arm on the driver's side and unfortunately I have the 4 bolt mount that bolts in from the backside. I was able to get 3 of the bots out, but the 4th wouldn't budge and I ended up stripping the head. Part of the problem is I can't get the transmission jacked up high enough to get the socket on properly. I tried undoing the front suspension mount and the engine mount inside the wheel well but neither did anything to allow me to jack it up any higher. So anyway, I bought some special sockets to get rounded bots out, but these sockets are even bigger around, so I definitely need to get this tranny out of the way. Any ideas?

I usually disconnect the top engine mount at the engine end rather than the bulkhead/ firewall and the gearbox torque link strut where it attaches to the front of the engine sub frame, this offers enough flex to lift/ jack the engine/ gearbox to get the offending bolt out.

I used six or seven 12" long 1/2" drive extensions along with a strong arm breaker bar to crack the bolts, you can feed the extensions through the spokes of the wheel on the opposite side of the car with an assistant to support/ guide it, not ideal but it got the job done - Mike

Purchase a low profile socket set and a short piece of pipe say 1.5 inches wide by 9 inches long to go over the handle. This avoids breaking/undoing mounts.
