850 turbo exhaust gasket install question

Post by phat78ta »

Hey all,
Finally getting to the head gasket job on the 850 turbo wagon, and I'm ready to get the head back on the motor. In the past, I have installed exhaust manifold gaskets by cutting out the bottom of the holes for the studs and dropping them down on to the studs. These gaskets are different than the ones on American cars that I'm used to. I don't want to mangle them up and render them un usable.
Has anyone cut theirs like this to ease install, or should I just be prepared to cuss a lot? Thanks!

With the turbo manifold it really isn't that tough to just hang them on the studs and then pop the manifold on. I've never had any remarkable trouble with the turbo gaskets. I did have a bit of a fight with a N/A header on my son's car but the N/A header / manifold has the whole downpipe in the same assembly and you have to kind thread the downpipe around stuff to get it in place.

Cool, thanks Lee.I ran into this beauty on the double check before installing the head, so I'm fixing it first.

When I'm installing the head, I put the studs in the head, slip the gaskets in place, start at one end and zig zag dental floss over the threads of the studs to keep the gaskets in place. As soon as you start the car the floss will burn away.

Since I was several Coors original deep last night, I neglected to mention that I did not remove the exhaust from the car. By some miracle the studs ALL came or of the head. I will try to insert the studs partially into the manifold and hang the gaskets on them.
