2001-2003 S60 Transmission Issues?

Post by daedalus »

Hey guys,

I'm aware of the problems that plagued the transmissions on the 2001-2003 model years V70/XC70s.
I am looking at S60s now for myself and am wondering, do these same model years suffer the same problems that the V70/XC70s did? I find myself mentally precluding these years as I search for a car and that really narrows down my options. So, I decided that rather than assume they had similar problems, I would ask.
Thanks.

01-02
03s are much better in general
AWDs have more problems than FWDs because of the added hardware and stress to the system

Jim,
So is that to say that, all things being equal, a FWD 01 or 02 would be okay? What about the manual transmissions for either of these model years? Issues of their own, or good to go?

I would avoid 01/02 entirely for autos. The FWD isn't necessary better than AWD as a blanket statement - I've got an '02 AWD, and in particular the AWD version (at least for me) didn't have the faulty ETM module installed. I also never had the stop-neutral feature on my car. This would be the same for some turbo '02s as well I assume (someone correct me though, I'm going off memory).

I can't imagine the price difference between an '02 to '03 would ever be worth the potential hassle of transmission/ETM/angle gear issues. Even if you have a manual transmission there is potential other issues (see the ETM) you've got to be careful of during that time-frame.
