2000/2001 V40 Dash parts swap?

Our 2000 V40 has a broken center dash AC vent and surround that needs replacing. I pulled one off the 2001 parts car to replace it and noticed there is a difference in the surround. The 2000 has a wheel that appears to control the vents up or down inside the dash, the 2001 does not have this wheel. Does the wheel do any real service, or can I set the vent position midway and use the 2001 without the adjusting wheel? Thanks as always!
