98 S70 No start, CEL always on(does not cycle)

Post by RotatedDC2 »

I bought a 98 S70 with a blown HG and ended up having to swap the motor because there was more water in the pan than oil. The only engine that was available locally that was at a reputable salvage yard was out of a 99 S70. Obviously I had to swap the 98 distributor, intake mani, acc. bracket, and misc. other things onto the new engine to work in the car. No problems there...

Here is the problem, car does not start. It has fuel but I noticed the CEL does not cycle when the key is turned, it just is constantly illuminated. From my experience on other vehicles this would indicate that the ECU either is not getting power, is not grounded, or has failed. But I am confused since I do have fuel pressure. Am i incorrect or do i need to find the ECU ground/ trace power distribution to figure out why it is not starting.

Thank you for your help!

That's a big swap because those two engines have totally different engine management systems as well as induction, don't they?

Did you get all of the grounds bolted back onto the block. Other than the main negative battery cable there are two or three bundles of black wires that bolt to the forward facing side of the block. Included in those bundles are the common wires for the ECU and its related sensors.

Is this a N/A or a turbo engine?

Its N/A. I thought I did get all of the ground wires bolted back to the block. There was one small ground closer to the front of the engine and then there was the large cable i believe was a ground as well(close to the starter).

In response to the other question they would have totally different engine management because of it being COP ignition but I swapped everything externally so that all fuel, ignition, and acc were the same from the previous engine. the block and head themselves are nearly the same.

The blocks are pretty much the same and I think the ports are the same. On the turbo it has the CVVT which is why I asked, I don't think the '99 N/A had CVVT and that didn't come along until 2000. I've never messed with a '99 or a 2000 N/A car so I could be totally wrong.

Were the original accessory mounting bracket holes still there on the block? The '99 accessory mounts were completely different and the holes aren't there on the older blocks for the '99 scheme.

The factory schematics show the ground points on the block, they can be downloaded from this link:

The pagination is messed up so it is hard to find things on them but I distinctly remember seeing the grounding locations under the hood on one of the diagrams.

The 98 uses 4 bolts compared to the 6 i believe for the 99 as far as the accessory mount bracket is concerned but the old one bolted to the new block no problems, i did have to modify the timing cover slightly for the belt tensioner to fit in. The hardest part to move to the new engine was the distributor and the CPS but that only required slight modification again to the pieces the rotor and the cps trigger use to attatch to the cams. but like I said I had no problems with any of that.

thank you for the link to the wiring diagrams.... i loath wiring diagrams, my head hurts just preparing to look at them

and no cvvt started in 00 for the N/A cars. the cams are totally different with cvvt(obviously) and the swap would not have worked at all then.
I cant tell you how many junk yard motors apart to figure out if i could use the 99 engine.
