2000 V40 vibration only during acceleration

I have a 2000 V40 that vibrates dramatically when under load. Take the foot off the gas and the vibration stops even when at 60+mph. I am assuming it's either a bad axle or CV joint(s). Can you replace the CV joints and reuse the axle or is it all one piece? Are any special Volvo tools required for this task? The tires are balanced so that is not the issue.
