2000 v70-XC: Ordering spark plugs and coils

Post by Steveo9632000 »

I have a 2000 v70-XC that is misfiring, all the symptoms are there rough idle, engine jumping while accelerating and then smoothing out once hitting comfortable highway speeds.

Looking online to order spark plugs and coils, I would really like to knock them all out and have been looking at ZZ Auto parts, has anyone used them before?

Here is the exact product I am looking at, I see that the coil product number matches the coil I would need if ordering off of fcpeuro, have tried calling zz for confirmation that it is the correct part for my vehicle but it is a Sunday so I am assuming they are currently closed as the phone rings and I am allowed to leave a message.

Part look right to everyone here? I have used a couple of tutorials off this site here before (thermostat replacement for one) but this is my first time posting, be gentle. :D

I just got done replacing the spark plugs on my new to me 2000 V70 X C. On start up extremely rough running. Smooth after warming up and at highway speeds. The gaps on the old plugs have worn considerably. I would put in new Volvo plugs. I got my set off the bay for $55.00 with free shipping. I would hold off on coil packs.

Just for giggles the gap on the pictured plug is .032. I was able to fish another plug from the trash and it was at .036. The correct gap should be .028.

The coils tend to be pretty binary, they either work or they don't. With a bad coil the misfire would remain at any speed and the ECU is very good about picking up the problem and setting CEL with a P030x code with x being the cylinder number of the misfire. A bad coil can be verified by swapping it from the bad cylinder to another and seeing if the code number follows the coil.

OEM plugs are always a good bet but I use the cheapo Bosch copper cores on most of mine. The important thing is the gap, 0.028 and error to the tight side. Out of the box they will typically be 0.035 to 0.045. The aftermarket multi electrode ground plugs can't be gapped and they should be avoided. The auto parts stores say they will work, and they will screw in, but they never work correctly.

Thanks for the quick reply kahl and Ozark.

Will go with the Volvo plugs and hope that does the trick. I was looking at doing the coils as well simply because i am taking off time from work to get this done, have about an hour commute to work so definitely am not going to put such an old vehicle through that type of stress just to wait till the weekend.

As far as the symptoms go for the coils, pretty much it smooths out but say I am driving in tunnel I can hear a noise similar to a baseball card clipped to a bike spoke, this noise is present at all times when accelerating at low speeds.

I will let you know how it goes!

Update for everyone, just ran scanner and the misfire is happening in cylinder three, have my drill charging now so once that is set will go ahead and change the spark plug for the cylinder.

I am also receiving an error code have to deal with the Turbo Control Valve, I can see it is not pricey and seems pretty simple to fix but my question is how long is the car driveable with this failure?

Can't miss any more time from work so going to order the part to have it come over the weekend, plan on driving to work the next 3 days. Let me know if this is a terrible idea please.

You use a drill to change the spark plug? Misfire in a cylinder is usually a coil.
