850 GLT Estate Empty the Fuel tank

Post by chuffchuff »

This is probably a valedictory contribution from me. The 1996 850 GTS ESTATE is going to the place where all good Volvos go. So many thanks for your help over the past years.

So here’s my bit about emptying the fuel tank (also called bypassing or jumping the fuel pump relay.)
for the non-specialist (or Bodger as we say around here).
To avoid any misunderstandings please note that this information is about a car in England.

Tools etc
Tailgate prop (broom or mop handle)
Socket set (small sizes)
Plumbers Wrench
Quarter inch bore clear plastic tube.
Fuel can(s) and maybe a car with an empty tank
Torx head screwdrivers or keys (They are the ones with a business end like a 6 pointed star/asterisk)
Needle nosed pliers (or medium sized paper clip)

Start
I tried the ‘shop-bought’ siphon, but couldn’t get past the anti-siphon device. (I think that’s what it was)

So, courtesy of these and other pages on ‘tinterweb I located the fuel pump access cover. It is in the floor behind the offside passenger seat.
To work on it you will need to prop the tailgate open (it could slam shut on your legs) remove the lift-up floor panel nearest the bumper , lift and secure (prop upright)) the panel behind the seats and remove the spare wheel cover.

For good pictures of this bit see http://volvo850wagon.wordpress.com/2012 ... fuel-tank/
From Jim Peisker | Cedar Park, Texas. Many thanks to him
Home Page http://volvo850wagon.wordpress.com/

There are three hex nut holding the cover. Under the cover there are two connections that look like spark plug covers. Wiping the pipes connected to these I found the one on the left had a yellow marker tape just like Jim Peisker's pictures.

Having no special tool (and clearing any other pipes or cables away first) I used an Adjustable Water Pump Grip Pliers as a lever by hooking the tip of the jaw under the front edge of the connector and levering SLOWLY against the edge of the hole in the floor.

The plastic siphon tube fit snugly over the nozzle. Other end in the fuel can OUTSIDE.

Now the electrical bit. Under the bonnet (hood?) directly below the corner of the windscreen on the driver’s side is a flat box with a narrow lid marked “Fuses” ... leave that on

Use the torx drver to carefully remove the four short screws holding the lid ... save’ em. Joggle the lid off... it’s like a tupperware lid, waterproof.

Now see pictures. Image Image Image Image Image Image Image
I put these in because being of little brain I was confused by the ones in Jim Peisker’s page. (No disrespect to him). With these and Jim’s more technical stuff you should be able to jump the connection and run the pump to empty your tank. Cheers
