2001 S80 Cruise control issue

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2001 S80 Cruise control issue

Post by johnboneske »

The s80 I recently bought has an issue with the cruise control... Sometimes it doesn't even show up on the instrument cluster on the dash when pushing the button, other times when it is working it just shuts off and it wont re-engage. It seems to me to be an electrical problem, but where to start? Have others had a similar issue??

Hello,

I had issues with the cruise control disengaging and not reengaging - it turned out to be the brake position sensor. The wiring connector solder joints in the sensor fail and can be re-soldered once you get into the thing. The sensor is near the brake booster, It's a reasonably well documented issue/repair:

Was the Brake Position Sensor for me too. I had my mechanic replace it while he was doing other work. The DIY soldering looked simple, but I doubted my abilities and just had my mechanic replace it.

John I have exactly the same problem, and I am 101% sure the brake sensor is culprit. Plus when cruise disengage you might see the message "Check Engine" .

Thank you...I am working on it, but cant seem to figure out how to remove the sensor? I read that I need to bleed off the pressure(by pressing brake pedal till it is hard) and to remove the "C" clip from around it, but damn is it tight in there... How do i get around the master cylinder to remove it??

Clean the perimeter of the sensor with a solvent so you can reveal the clip. Once it's clean you can rotate it to where the gap iis located and then pry it off with a pick tool or jeweller's screwdriver.

ahhh...you can rotate the sensor and clip at the same time? I notice the clip is positioned at the 3 o'clock position, at 9 o'clock would be ALOT better...

its tight in there!!
