2002 S60 2.4T has positive crankcase pressure

Post by horseguytenn »

Have completely replaced the cooling system, completely rebuilt turbo, cleaned turbo coolant lines, replaced crankcase vent hose and oil trap (pcv service by tech), and new thermostat housing gasket, inlet, and thermostat............problem is when I start it and let it idle......and when I place a rubber glove over oil fill hole......it inflates.

Don't really want to run it a lot till I figure it out......any thoughts or suggestions?

Do compression check wet and dry. If numbers markedly increase and oil consumption is high you probably have worn cylinder bores.

Before he does that he should do a COMPLETE breather replacement, he did not. I wonder if he either has a small cracked hose or the hole into the pan is clogged and was not looked at
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

So he should spend another 5 hours, remove the inlet manifold & chase a possible clogged PCV when he can spend 30 minutes on a decisive compression check first?

Then he will spend another 5 hours, because it is indeed PCV. Replacement of oil trap alone gives nothing.

The PCV service was done by a tech, and the crankcase breather hose was replaced as well. Unless the tech has done an incomplete job, I'd do a compression test as well. As said, oil consupmtion, mileage and general condition of the engine would be good indicators.

PCV kit includes long hairy hose with aluminum tubes and banjo bolts. It costs half of the kit price. It is important to change it too.

Also if the return oil passage is completely clogged, he needs to drop off oil sump and clean it properly.

How many miles are on this car and does it have a regular oil replacement history?

Part #13 is a problem area on the turbos. It has a tight passage that clogs and the plastic lines are so brittle it's near impossible to clean it out. Volvo dealers sell a "kit" to replace that part.
