2000 S70 2.3l stumbled then started to tick from engine

Post by picardwcjr »

I was driving at about 40 mph when the engine stumbled abit then started to tap. When checked the TB I found it had slipped a tooth. Not knowing when the last TB change was, I bought it used with 198,000 on, I changed the TB, wp, and pulleys. I have the timing set exactly as all the posts suggest and I still get the tapping noise when I start the engine. Afraid to drive it not knowing what could be causing the problem and don't want to add to it. There was no loss of power when the tapping started but it does make a lot of noise, and it increases when the rpms go up. I have no idea what could be causing this and welcome any thought on the matter

A video or sound file uploaded with the tapping noise may help to identify it.

Was there slack in the timing belt? How do you know it slipped? Usually 1 tooth will not cause any damage to the motor. Some people actually install it a tooth off by accident.

A video would be nice.

I had noticed a tapping when it was idling that would go away with accelerating before this current issue. Yes there was slack in the tb and the mechanical tensioner was not set properly. I am trying to get video up so you can here what it sounds like.

Does the noise dissapear when you add oil to the engine as it is running?

Has the timing been set correctly now?

Do a compression test.

It's hard to tell how loud it is as some microphones tend to exaggerate high frequency noises, however that DOES sound very much like conrod or main bearing knock.

Found the issue, had 150lbs compression in all 5 cylinders. Then when I restarted after getting back together something in the lower engine broke and locked the engine up. Thanks for trying to help but looks like I sell the car or replace the engine. Where is a good place to look for rebuilt engines that are cheap.

Found out what was making the noise. The number 3 cylinder connecting rod cap was loose, and came completely off, then wedged between the crankshaft and engine block. The block is cracked so no rebuild possible. Will put in another engine and continue to drive my Volvo.
