Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2004 S80 2.5T FWD Newbie needing info

Post by Baldie2u »

I have acquired my first Volvo and would appreciate some advice. It appears, touch wood, to be in very good condition it has a genuine 69,000 miles on it. I live in mid-Michigan, USA. My initial questions are

1. As it has been run on conventional oils would you stay on them at this stage or switch to synthetic?

And 2. At what mileage should the timing belt be changed and is it just the timing belt or other items as well that should be done?

I would be grateful for people's input as I'd rather learn before then have to suffer after lol!

Use a synthetic like Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platnum or Quaker State Ultimate Durability. 10w-30 or 5w-40. 5000 miles maximum with filter every change. Purchase filters from above sponsors.

Timing belt is due now at 10 years. Change idler and tensioner. I also changed the water pump. Good time to flush and replenish the coolant. Use Volvo parts and coolant.

Drain and refill transmission if never done. Use Mobil 3309. Purchase from amazon. It will take a full case of 12 quarts or more.

Lots of good information here.

Many thanks that's exactly the type of info I was looking for. I was worried I heard stories that if you switched to synthetic after miles had been done you ran the risk of damaging valve seals.
