Currently i use an elm327 and either scanmaster or obdwiz which is great for general odb2 stuff, but now that i actually own a volvo, and it will never be serviced by anyone other than me i want something complete (current issue is needing to replace a damper door and the calibration involved) and vehicle specific.
Been poking around all over and vol-fcr with a vag-com seems to be the only option....I have seen the alex pepper software however i have heard rumors that it will not reset the service light (and as much as i like to modify everything i also like to keep the factory systems working as close to perfect as possible.
For what its worth, its a 98 v70 t5 auto, all original, reciepts, maintenance records and original window sticker from day 1...oil changes every 3k, near perfect condition (small tear in the drivers bolster) and 280k mi....as a freelance mechanic by trade just looking at the vehicles overall condition, my first thought was "that can't be miles....its got to be km"....its been a long time since i have been so in love with a car
98 V70 Vol-FCR or ????

VAG-COM works real well with a '98 and cracked versions are floating all over the P2P sites (Think Arrgh). If I'm not mistaken the VAG-COM cable is an elm327 cable.
There is another software package that is in kind of a beta stage and it can be a bit geeky to get it set up if you aren't familiar with running terminal emulation programs.

vag-com and elm are different, was checking out the link and it looks interesting, but i am not seeing what the at codes for things like resetting the service light or issuing a damper door calibration.
I am going to test it out to try to diag my ecc...once in a while i get the flashing lights (however everything still works, and if i stop and restart the car it does not reoccur. The other issue is my passenger side temp door occasionally makes a whining noise....it changes temps fine, and when it makes the noise if i drop the temp dial by 4 degrees it stops...move it back to the previous set temp and the noise usually does not return.

You're probably already aware of it, but in case others aren't it's worth mentioning that there is another way to get the ECC to tell you the codes (and to command it to initialize the dampers).... make yourself a little homebrew 'code-reader':
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 43#p251189
It's an option worth considering if you don't mind cobbling together a switch, LED, resistor, some wires and pins.

timmybdaddyof3 (and all),
1. At the present time, my #1 vote for your "????" is "Brick-Diag Free v0.0.6.6 with assist by volvo850diag" (and would probably be "Brick-Diag Full", all by itself, if that were publicly available).
2. For all AT commands and KWPD3B0 requests to issue to an ELM327 in order to Reset SERVICE Light, see item 2 in this post:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=56321&start=28#p332575
Use terminal emulator of your choice. I suggest STNterm to get up and running immediately on Windows.
Or just download volvo850diag v0.7 (or later) from volvo850diag.zip and use volvo850diag's "ATZ Reset SRI" button (or the ECU 51 "*" button at the end of the ECU 51 line).
3. The ECC in a '98 V70 is KWPD3B0 conversant via ECU 29, contrary to how the ECC worked for the '96-'97 850 -- accessable via the flashing LED tool.
I have no idea if the flashing LED tool (that jreed suggested) can still be used for a '98 V70 ECC, but I definitely know that the '98 V70 ECC is accessible with requests similar to those used for the COMBI, SRS, ABS, AW 50-42, Power Seats, and Motronic 4.4.
volvo850diag v0.7 (and later) can communicate with the '98 V70 ECC to read the Hardware/Software version, read/clear the DTCs, and a few other things. But you'll have to keep in mind that the kwpd3b0_interpreter.html (at present) only understands 1 of the ECC's raw hex DTC vs. 3-digit Volvo DTC correspondences for the '98 V70 ECC. So I think volvo850diag's only benefit to you (at present) concerning the '98 V70 ECC is to clear those ECC DTCs.
[Hint: If you use volvo850diag v0.7 (or later), you'll have to enable the scanning of ECU 29, since it is not enabled by default. The readme_volvo850diag.txt explains how to enable/disable scanning of some of the ECUs. It's a simple one line edit per ECU, then redisplaying volvo850diag.html.]
Hint: Vol-FCR Full and Brick-Diag Free are probably much better ways than volvo850diag (in its present state) to debug your ECC problems.
4. The main cheap VAG/COM KKL based alternative to Vol-FCR is Brick-Diag Free v0.0.6.6.
Brick-Diag Free v0.0.6.6 is better than Vol-FCR Demo, since Brick-Diag Free can read (and interpret) all DTCs and it can clear all DTCs.
Brick-Diag Free v0.0.6.6 is almost as good as Vol-FCR Full, with the main exception that Brick-Diag Free can *not* Reset Service Light.
Brick-Diag Free can read/clear the DTCs and doesn't involve visiting pirate sites. It has a nice user-interface (which is easily switchable between German, English, and French). And Brick-Diag Free (with proper pin 7 - pin 3 swap) can communicate with Motronic 4.3 -- something which Vol-FCR can not do. However, Brick-Diag Free can not Reset Service Light -- something which both Vol-FCR and volvo850diag can do. And Brick-Diag Free can not alter the intervals that determine when the SERVICE light comes on -- something which volvo850diag can do.
For more info on Brick-Diag Free, search for "synopsis of Brick-Diag Free Beta v0.0.6.6" and/or "How to download Brick-Diag Free Beta v0.0.6.6 for English speakers" on the volvo_850_diag_links.html page.
5. I have no knowledge of how to do the calibration for a '98 V70 ECC, unless it is still also addressable by the flashing LED tool that jreed mentioned.
My wild guess is that it involves B0xx and/or B2xx requests, similar to how the COMBI's Reset SERVICE Light works. But that's a sheer guess. And I'm certainly not in a position to blindly experiment to see what the request(s) really are.
You might have to resort to the dealer or someone that has a Volvo Scan Tool (VST) or some other high-end tool that mimics a VST.
timmybdaddyof3, have you checked if Brick-Diag Free v0.0.6.6 can access the '98 V70 ECC?
If Brick-Diag Free can do that, then it will be able to at least translate the ECC DTCs into the 3-digit Volvo codes. That would help some. But that capability should also be available in Vol-FCR Full.
If you figure out what any of the ECC's raw hex DTC vs. 3-digit Volvo DTC correspondences are, let me know and I'll add them to kwpd3b0_interpreter.html.
6. The VAG/COM KKL cable is definitely **not** an ELM327.
The ELM327 is used with volvo850diag, EasyOBDii, OBDwiz, Torque, and a slew of other OBDII emission diagnostics software.
The VAG/COM KKL cable is used with Vol-FCR, Brick-Diag Free, MotronicSuite, etc. Those programs can **not** use an ELM327.
You can do more with an VAG/COM KKL cable than with an ELM327. You can even use a VAG/COM KKL cable in conjunction with something that swaps OBDII pin 7 to other OBDII pins, eg, pin 3, pin 6, pin 13, so that you don't even need a flashing LED tool to read/clear DTCs for Motronic 4.3, ECC (on '96-'97 850), Cruise Control. In fact, that pin swapping of pin 7 with pin 3 is how Brick-Diag Free v0.0.6.6 and MotronicSuite are able to communicate with the Motronic 4.3. That capability is totally impossible with an ELM327 device, since the Motronic 4.3 communicates with the KWP71 protocol which is completely foreign to the ELM327.

to all i appreciate the responses....i am thinking i am going to start diving in to the home-brew methods of this and use all of the apps mentioned just as a point of reference to decipher the codes being handed out....
hoping to get a handle on this in the coming week and will post back my findings
