99 S70 What hose did I blow?

Post by adha153 »

Hey guys, I'm in need of a little bit of help. I blew a hose the other day on the way to the gas station. Suddenly a loud sound that I can only describe as sounding like a sneeze or a pshshsh! Almost immediately afterwards I noticed the AC begin to quit working. So I pulled in and filled up with gas and looked under the hood and noticed a disconnected hose in the front under the radiator. The hose is not as big around as a radiator hose but I don't know what it is. I did see a small puddle of green coolant on the pavement underneath it when I found it. I snapped a couple pictures. Just wanted to know what hose it is and what is involved to fix it. Thanks!

I thought ac hose as well. After a more thorough look it's the ac hose that goes from compressor to condenser. If I put a new hose on, do I need to refill refrigerant?

That's uv dye check coming dripping. Worry more about how much oil came out with it.

As the hose is replaced you should also replace the accumulator. Once those parts are installed you need to pull a vacuum on the system and check that the vacuum holds for at least 30 minutes. I use a micron gauge and run the vacuum pump for typically about 15 minutes or until I get to at least 500 microns. With a vacuum gauge you should get it very close to -30 PSI

After you verify the vacuum start by adding 200 cc of PAG 100 oil (in most cases with most Zexel compressors) and then follow with R-134A. You can add oil to the accumulator in liquid form but it is easier to use the pressurized cans that hook up like the small R-134A cans.

To get things right your really need to have a gauge manifold and a vacuum pump so it might be better for you to farm out recharging the system. Just make sure that they add the oil.

Thanks Lee! I think I'm gonna take the car in to my mechanic to have the work done. I did not even think that the compressor would have oil but that makes sense. I will make sure that it gets the oil back into it.
Does anyone know what I should expect to pay for a service like that?

My guess would be about $250.

AC line 100 USD
Accumulator 100 USD
2 hours labor 80-100

I'll estimate about 400 USD total.

Thanks for the estimates. I just called the shop and they quoted it for about $260 without the accumulator. That's about what I thought it might be. My other question is can I wait to get it done and still drive it or will it ruin the compressor without there being any oil in there?

You can run it only if you do not allow the AC clutch to engage for any period of time (I would physically disconnect the electrical wire from the clutch terminal and secure it from getting caught)
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that
