1999 V70 T5 Driver side CV joint axle repair, pix

Post by abscate »

I finished the front end

Struts
Springs
Seats
left front wheel bearing

Treated myself to the IPD strut brace too.

Went to drive away on test, and a horrible axle noise in left.

When i drifted the axle out of the hub, I must have gorilla'd it and broken up the inner CV - the outer one feels fine, but when I spin the wheel there is all sorts of bad motion on the inner CV joint.

Do i free the outer joint again, and just slide the axle from the manual transmission?

Do I need a new axle, CV joint??

I hope I didn't damage the transmission.

Well, since you have gotten 41 looks and no posted sympathy as yet, I will just say, I feel your pain even though I haven't had the exact same unfortunate occurrence. I locked up the rear end of my '57 Chevy once right after my dad and I put 4:11 gears in there. It wasn't pleasant.

I'll take a guess and say you probably are going to need a rebuilt axle. So this is a bump, until you get some commiseration.

Sorry for the bad luck, the axle needs to be secured in place with a steel wire so it doesn't hang free.

Maybe this can be helpful

I've had a couple of them come apart at the inner joint but I've been able to put them back together. One of them I was able to do it without removing the boot but on the other one I had to remove the boot from the large end to re-assemble it. On that latter one I had to buy a boot kit just to get a new clamp.

I'm feeling better about this this morning. I'm a pretty careful mechanic and I didn't drift the end of the shaft more than about a cm

I did let it hang at a funny angle a few times wrestling with the strut ....I might have just let the CV joint cone part inboard.

It's a heavy travel week for me this week so I won't have time until next week to look it over

Does the axle just pull out of the trans after I get it out of the bearing and knuckle?

Answer: with a 12 inch screwdriver, levering gently against the case, the axle pops out of the trans case. Be ready to catch it, and also some trans oil ooze

I think it is held in place with a clip of some sort.I believe the process is to get a pry bar between the axle and transmission and leverage out the axle, there should be a distinct popping feel when it disengages. My car is an automatic and this is what I did. I'm pretty sure it really is that easy. Be careful of the axle seal at the transmission.

The left hand axle on the manual transmission behaves just like it does on the slushbox. It has the circlip that locks the axle in place. Hopefully you won't need to completely remove the axle to get things back inside the inner CV joint and you can do it by just freeing the ball joint from the control arm. It might be fixable even without pulling the ball joint by just pulling the boot back.

Here is what you are looking at as far as the internals of the inner joint go:
GEDC1036.JPG
This is the ring that is supposed to keep the joint in the socket, that is likely what dislodged. If you slide the boot back you can get to it and, if it isn't mangled, it snaps back into a groove. This can be done with the axle still seated in the transmission. If the retainer is all wadded up then you have a problem, I know of no source for just the retainer.

Just for grins, here is what the rest of the internals look like.

Each of the three bearing races has approximately 33 needle bearings operating each bearing. Each bearing shell has a small circular clip which stops the bearing from dislodgiing. It will all be clearer once you degrease the assembly.

If one or more of the bearing shells has slipped off you'll need to pick out all the needles in that mess of grease (perhaps use some tight fitting nitrile gloves for this purpose)
Once you have all the needles back in place slip the beariing shell back on.

Remember that the 3 bearing carrier has a conical spline and has a top and bottom. Be sure to place it back on with the top facing up.
