2002 S80: DTC P0607 shown, but car runs great

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2002 S80: DTC P0607 shown, but car runs great

Post by Legion »

I recently purchased a 2002 S80 2.9L non-turbo. Shortly (read that on the way home) after I purchased it, the CEL lit. I had Autozone read the codes and they found a P0113 and a P0607. It appears that the P0113 is signaling an issue with the intake air temperature sensor, which appears to be built into the MAF on this model. I plugged my code scanner in at home and verified that I have an airflow reading from the MAF that is reasonable at idle, and increases with engine speed. The intake air temperature reads -40F (offscale low probably).
As for the P0607, that appears to point to a faulty ECM. The car runs very well (no misses, gas mileage reasonable, etc.) so I believe that the ECM is probably ok. From what I can find online, the car will enter "limp mode" or just fail to start when the ECM goes south.
The car has been in a front end collision & repaired by a PO. It does exhibit strange electrical symptoms at times (dead battery for no real reason, blower motor for AC turns on when key is off and out of ignition, etc.) which makes me think it is a wiring issue?
Does all this pass a "reality check"? What do you guys think?

I would have the battery and charging system checked first. Most if the parts store will do this service for free. Then check your ground connections in the front right of the car. I know on my 2000 s80 2.9 all hell broke loose with some corroded battery cables.

I found the cause of the P0113 code. A damaged wire in the harness which lead to the MAF. All fixed & reading intake air temperature correctly. I found the PO had painted the ground pads when the car was repainted, so I am cleaning the paint and primer off of them now.
