1996 960 mode selector flashing

I have had this problem for a little while. I start the car, put it in reverse and back up. I put it in drive and sometimes the mode selector starts flashing. I have removed the mode selector and it fell apart in my hands. I put it back together and installed and the problem disappeared, for awhile. I then ordered the new part and installed, it the problem is still there. What else can it be?
