1992 240 sensor question

1992 240 sensor question

On my 92 240, there is what looks to be some sort of sensor that goes into the block very near the oil filter, but towards the front of the car. Only one wire comes out of it. I have been unable to find out what it is from looking at the Haynes manual, would someone be able to enlighten me?
