Hello wierd issue here.
I went on holidays for a month, came back, and noticed some slight thumping when braking. I thought perhaps it was a bit of rust, but it's been more than 1000 kms, and it is still there, so I assume it is not build-up.
Fast forward to yesterday. Driving, and all of a sudden the ABS repair light comes on. I didn't notice anything odd. Turned the car off, back on, light is gone.
However, what I have noticed is that when I am driving with the clutch ENGAGED (pedal pushed in), I get a thumping sound from the front-end... if I am going fast, I barely hear it and barely feel it. But it is there. If I am going slow (i.e. under 10 km/h) it feels like the brakes are engaging ever so slightly, and only for a split second, timed to the revolutions of the wheels. Each time the wheel turns I feel the tug and hear the clunk.
If I do NOT have the clutch pedal pushed in, I do not hear the sound, even when driving slowly. I have verified this. The interaction with the clutch is the part that is confusing me.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for the help!
Jason

Clutch pushed in is DISENGAGED of course, just for semantics.

I think I would go with a bad CV joint...when you DISENGAGE the clutch, you change the drive force from engine-driving-wheels to wheels-driving engine. If there is slop in your CV joints (either inner or outer) you will hear a clunk. You might be able to jack it up, put the car in gear, and reproduce the noise turning the wheel back and forth to listen for clunking.
If you get on it quickly, you might just be able to pull the boot back and relube the CV joint for 5 USD worth of grease, otherwise it is a drive axle replacement of course, about 100 USD used.

Thanks.
I took it for a drive this evening, and the clunking is happening when I am turning left, with or without the clutch disengaged. When I turn right, I don't hear the sound. That means the right CV joint is gone, doesn't it? I will try to apply grease, but if I pull the wheel and see that the boot is torn, I assume it's too late?
How difficult is to to replace the CV joints, or do I have to replace the entire right axle?
Thanks again,
Jason

I just did my P80 axle in about 2 hours, but have never done a P2 (later model)
If the boot is torn, you want to take it out, clean it thoroughly, and degrease - in which case it might be easier just to replace with a good used one. We have a good network of used car parts in the US that Im not sure you have in LU
