96 850 Turbo Pulling head, ? about exhaust disconnect

Post by JimBee »

The heat shields are out and the turbo oil return allen screws are loosened. I'll remove the banjo bolts to free the oil and coolant lines. I really want to leave the exhaust manifold attached to the head, as that seems like the easiest way to pull the head with all the other peripherals removed or loosened. To do that, I'll need to remove the four bolts that connect the exhaust manifold to the exhaust housing on the turbo.
Questions:
with those 4 bolts out will those two flanges separate or are they going to be "welded" together and if they crack free, with the studs still in the manifold will I be able to move the turbo with exhaust, etc. far enough back to give me enough clearance off the studs to lift off the head? I have a helper.

If those flanges are stuck what's the best way to separate them without damaging something else?

I've pulled a head before on an n/a 850, but haven't worked on the exhaust/ turbo much, so I appreciate any tips and traps to avoid!

I'd rather remove the head with no exhaust manifold on it, less weight to lift.

Yes- the turbo will come off the exhaust manifold and away from the car. Common practice at my house is to pull the manifold with the turbo attached when redoing the head.

Usually the flanges come apart. You may break a bolt or two but once its on the bench it can be repaired. Remember to use a penetrant that is good on rust like Kroil or acetone and trans fluid 50/50.
