Volvo Repair Database 1999 Volvo V70XC Hard Start - Check Valve install

Post by Seboroth_V70XC »

Hey everyone, I know this has been talked about to death, but I wanted to start a thread so that some updated info can be shared. If you have done this already, can you please state what year, and model it was done on? And if it fixed your problem? I am at the moment about to replace my fuel filter and attach the check valve before the filter ( in direction of fuel flow ). On my car, it doesn't seem like there is enough clearance for the check valve before the fuel filter, so I was going to modify my filter a bit, and take an inch off the filter inlet nipple. I will post pictures as well. I just want to hear some more feedback about this fix. Thank you.

Theres a few on here already. I found them by looking for posts by JRL, and searching for hard start.
I've seen a lot of questions on it, but no updates, I figure that it fixed the problem. Most people will only update if there are problems.

I think there is more room in the line after the filter and it doesn't matter which side of the filter it goes on as far as its performance goes.

I was thinking about going that route too. Putting the valve after the filter (direction of flow). But I've seen people do this with the valve before the filter, so I went with that route.

I'm pleased to announce that after a problem with the wrong starter, and a rusty and P.I.T.A. fuel filter bracket bolt, the new fuel filter is installed with the check valve attached. And, it starts better than it ever did!!!! I bought this car with this starting issue and my mechanic friend and I were both chasing down sensors problems, and thinking that perhaps it may be a cam sensor. Here is my write up.

Here is what I recived from an Amazon store. I have a feeling that this was a returned part because the nipples for rubber hose already had the compression fittings attached, and there were no white nylon fittings for hose. I'm trying to see if I can at least get a little credit back, but I'm not worried about it. I purchased a couple of compression fitting assortment kits, seeing that I was thinking about modifying what I had.

Here is where I was running into a space issue. I wanted to put the valve before the filter because I've seen and read of others doing it that way, and it working.

So, to remeidy this, I decided to cut down the inlet nipple on the filter to help with the length.

This is how much I had to work with, which was just enough. I kind of eyeballed it, but it worked for what I was planning.

Here is the result with the fitting on the filter. I had to use the end of a union as a drift to hammer the compression piece on the filter without damaging it. ** Before doing this, remember to put the fitting nut on before tapping the compression piece on the filter!** I made the mistake at first and had to pull it off the filter with a pliers. I had extra compression fittings from the assortment packs, so I didn't care that I ruined one piece.

Filter with check valve installed.

Because the metal nipple for rubber hoses had a flare on it, it would not fit into the stock fuel hose fitting. So, I decided to trim that part off as well.

Here is the finished product. The filter bracket wasn't bolted in yet, but it is now. I didn't have to cut into the lines at all. It fit, a bit snug, but it fit. Hope this helps everyone, and I'm a beliver so far. I'll update next week and let you all know. Thanks!!!

Update this morning. I've had two starts out of 15 that stumbled on itself. Still not bad. Worth the price for sure. Being on the third starter, this will save money for sure!

I recently tried this repair on my 2000 XC. It worked for the faulty check valve in the pump....however, the fuel pump decided crap out entirely soon thereafter. I had it repaired professionally (ouch) and told them to take out my in line valve. So I have a week long used check valve, PM me.

You want no line kinking/creasing from the additon of that valve.
