98 v70 non turbo - ABS module rebuild

Post by 98v70dad »

Can I unplug the ABS module and still have the car be useable for a week while I wait for the rebuilt module to arrive? I will have to pull the module one weekend and replace it with the rebuilt one the next weekend. I would guess that the only consequence of pulling the module would be a lit ABS trouble light on the dash and the fact that the ABS system would be inoperative. I would appreciate everyon'es thoughts on this.

I know the rebuild will come quickly and they are easy to remove/replace but I live in one city and the car is in another 100 miles away so it will take me at least a week to accomplish. Its my daughters car and it gets driven very little during the week. No ABS = no big deal.

The speedometer / odometer won't work and stuff like the auto volume on the radio won't work either but the car will drive just fine.

Doesn't Matty Moo at Midwest offer a swap out program?
Have him ship one out and do it all at once.

Yes. BUT you have to have one to swap. I won't have one to swap until I remove one and send it in. I live in Atlanta and the car lives an hour away. His website indicates that you have to send in your failed unit first and he will rebuild it for you. Maybe I misunderstood ... don't know. He was willing to have me pay about double (cost of the rebuilt unit and average cost of an ebay unit up front) and then he would refund my money when he got my core unit in swap but I don't want to do that.

I am also not confident what part number I need. This is a used car and I don't know what it originally came with ... tracs, no tracs, etc. I'd rather have the existing part to look at before I order something from anybody. I have had A LOT of problems relying on the accuracy of the Volvo Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC). Just about every part I've ordered based on what the IPC told me has been the wrong part. Better to pull the number off of the actual part and know you're getting the right thing.

Do you have the title or other paperwork with the VIN? If so, you can find out if the car has TRACS, that's really the only differentiator for your car. (or ask your daughter if there is a TRAC shutoff switch by the rear defog switch) And Midwest does Advance swap, he sends you a module and the socket to remove it, you fix, and then return core and socket, Matt set it up for the average DIY Volvo owner.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I send them out up front, you don't send your unit in first. I allow everybody plenty of time to send the old one back or get one to send back.

If you don't know what unit you have on the car this page will guide you in figuring it out. https://www.midwest-abs.com/Module_Types.php

Also if you contacted me through eBay you're going to pay more. 10 percent of my sales are on ebay but 80 percent of my problems come from there, so there's a built in PITA tax for eBay sales, especially if it's outright.

I didn't look closely enough at your website. It's pretty clear but I just didn't notice the right side of the page. You have a nice program for the average DIY person, but as I said I'm maintaining a car that's a 100 mile round trip to get to. A trip up and back can consume a whole weekend AND I just don't want to kill two weekends in a row. Also your info page is great for someone who has the car to refer to. I don't, and my daughter is not at all mechanically minded. I don't think she'll get me the correct information. Her usual answer to car questions from me is either I'm not sure or I don't know. Anyhow, you may be the best option I have. Thanks for the information.

I bet she can send a picture from her phone! Have her take a picture of the switches to the right of the steering column. If it has TRACS, that's where the switch will be. If it is just the rear defog and maybe sunroof, then no TRACS.
