1998 XC that I have not yet purchased?

Post by Ben850 »

I had just logged back on, and almost every recent post has issues with a '98.
I have not, and will not read the posts.
I will log out, come back in a bit, and post an inquiry.

Ha ha! Just be glad you own pre-'98s when things were basic and there was always an "unclouded day."

Early AWD could be a money pit.

So what'cha want'a know about pre-'98s? :D

Well, not so much about pre '98 that I'm even a bit worried about anymore.

Let us begin with the Nivomats.
I have already found an extra set with mounting bushings, bolts, brackets, and nuts.
I had bought them from the scrap yard for $9.56 ea.
So, I am not a complete dummy to begin with.
Of course I can turn those for a profit if I cannot use them.
But, I have the T-5R and also purchased Nivomat upper shock mounts from e-bay that are useable. and I have not yet even taken a close look at the T-5R rears.

Viscous coupling, prop-shaft, rear end issues are most of what I hear.
Otherwise it is really just an LPT '97 as far as I can see?

The best part of a 1998 on is the special Volvo service where someone flies in and brings you your parts...

A decision has been made to not empty my bank account into this venture.

Another decision has been made toward another.

I will likely pick up a 2002 S60 2.4T AWD next week.

The appropriate forum page will see lively activity as I am sure to have questions.
That being said.
I am done with this thread. (at least for now?)

I don't know if it was a result of my mentioning my date of purchase, (I usually don't do that) but someone had got to my seller the day before I was able to and had bought it out from under me.

That is ok. I have another to speak of soon. Actually one coming tomorrow and another on Saturday.
Updates to come.

I never did close out this thread.
I ended up finding another '98 XC in better shape.
Before I brought it home.

I had just put a radiator in it Yesterday after not having a chance to touch it in almost a year.
The radiator must have frozen at around this time.
The radiator must have frozen at around this time.
There was an extremely cold spell last winter and the radiator must have frozen while sitting.
last fall when I brought it home.
last fall when I brought it home.
It was already December.
It was already December.
I had driven it yesterday for the first time for any substantial time. It has new tires, new brakes. It felt luxuriously smooth with tight steering, no slack or pull. Struts are tight.

What I did find is the clunk on hard acceleration from the carrier bearing I would think.
It needs a battery as well. It does not hold a charge and seems to be running from the alternator mostly.
It will need plugs wires, cap, rotor.
With those minor updates, I think I made out pretty well for $1,000.
Oh, the interior is pristine. Non Smoking vehicle. (In more than one way.)

I will do the PVC.

A little smoke from the dipstick.
It will get a stage zero treatment.
Back with the other white ones. The black ones are still in storage.

Now that I have a 1998, I may require this service.
