96 850 R brakes, ABS control unit

Post by Doctah »

I have a 1996 850R with 123kmiles that's having some braking issues. The dealership tells me I need new rear brakes. Of course they want a fortune for them. They also claim I need a new ABS/TRACS control module. Being out of work but still concerned about safety, I'd like to do (at least the brakes) myself.

In scouting the rear brakes, my neighbor and I removed a wheel and got the caliper off. We were, however, unable to remove the rotor, even after removing the pin that's used to key the wheel. I suspect the rotor is simply rusted onto the (axle/whatever), but since I've never taken one of these off I don't know for sure. How do you get the rotor off when the caliper has already been removed? Any tips for replacing the pads?

I've looked at aftermarket parts. Are Zimmerman rotors the way to go? What about Brembo or Balo? And pads? PBS "deluxe", or metal, or Textar?

The second question is about the ABS control module. Is it an easy replacement? The dealership wants something like $650 for parts and labor. I can find a replacement module for $375. If it's easy to do, I'd prefer to do it myself. Has anybody done this?

Can't comment on the module except for yes, they do go bad and lots of em. Search this forum for more info on that.

Rotors -- hit em with a rubber hammer.

Pads/rotors -- go with OEM unless you want to experiment with squealing. Some get by without any noise, some go deaf with the noise from aftermarket parts. Me? I went with KVR carbon pads and had squealing for 3000 or so miles, now they seem to be ok.

Either way put the anti-sqeal goo between the pads and calipers. I did, but probly didn't get enogh on the one side that squeals.

Let us know what you do and how it goes...

Do I have to get OEM parts direct from my Volvo dealer or are there spots online that sell for less? The brands of rotors and pads I referred to in my previous post were found on oem-volvo-parts.com; a promising name, anyway.

You'll have to ask them if they're what the dealer sells.
