1998 S70 T5 -- Trailer hitch anybody?

Post by mar601 »

I remember some time back I went to Uhaul and I think the guy told me they couldn't put one on this car but hard to remember, 10 years ago. I simply want to be able to put a small trailer, maybe like this?

on the car to take my lawn tractor to Deere and misc lightweight things from time to time (short trips).

So, has anyone put a hitch on this car?

I have a hitch on my 94 850 sedan and 98 S70 T5. Both are O/E hitches. I use it a couple times a year.

Oh yea. Towing a U-Haul trailer with a Volvo 850/S70/V70/XC70. '97 850s and '98 S70/V70s are very similar. Your car will have a bit of an easier time towing because it has slightly more hp.

Sorry if I missed the info, but is your car a manual or auto? If manual then no reason to worry about the car as it should pull that trailer no problem. Obviously if the clutch is old, it may cause issues in the long run until it gets replaced.

If your car is an auto, does it have a trans cooler? Depending on the weather, this is a nice to have but again with that size of trailer should be fine. Worth giving the auto or manual trans a flush for safety.

In Europe folks pull travel trailers with all manner of small vehicles and also Volvos.

Main thing is make sure the wiring harness is done correctly. Some of the after-market ones can cause issues with the lighting electrics if not installed correctly.

Worth checking on E-bay as sometimes OE hitches come up on there, but make sure the harness is included. Worth checking with the advertisers of used parts that MVS have as sponsers.
