Hi folks,
I've read a few threads about timing on these vehicles ,but I'm a little cloudy with some of the procedures. Let me start from the beginning. This was a running car before the timing belt was changed. It ran ok for about a week then it was having problems starting. Then it just wouldn't start at all. The garage that changed it hauled it back ,and told me all kinds of stories why it probably wasn't starting. The mechanic admitted they weren't very proficient on these cars. I still suspect it's a timing issue. One thing I noticed when I got it back home was the tensioner was in the hot position 2 oclock ,and the engine is dead cold. I tried moving it back ,but I'm not 100% sure where it should go. From what I can find it should be in the middle ,or in the cold 10 oclock position ? I also noticed when I tried to tighten the bolt the indicator would move even when I was holding it with the 6mm allen wrench.
Another thing I would like to know is are the timing marks obvious on the crank ,and cams ,and are they suppose to be matched with the notches on the timing cover ?
I would like to get this running again. It isn't much ,but it's all my son has.
One other thing. Do the ignition coils need to be bolted down to fire ?
Thanks folks !

Thank you. Are there obvious markings on the crank ,and cams ? What about the tensioner ? How would you tell if it's bad ?

The coils do have individual ground wires that tie back to the cam cover in a couple of places but that is not a great ground. I have had trouble with the coils if they aren't snugged down with the individual coil bolts. One other thing. Do the ignition coils need to be bolted down to fire?

That's a bummer. How much did the timing belt change cost? How many miles, first or second belt?
I would want refund (pissed).

The change was about $500. It began having starting issues about a week after. First belt I know of. How can you tell if the tensioner is bad ? I was pushing on the belt yesterday ,and the tensioner needle was moving then it stopped like it was stuck ?1998v70xcbill wrote:That's a bummer. How much did the timing belt change cost?
