flame trap is it true it can't really be removed?

Post by dgg9879 »

After talking to people on this forum and consulting with Volvo I decided to ask my mechanic to remove the flame trap. He said he noticed the flame trap was cracked so he replaced it and got rid of the filter part of it so that it does not have to be cleaned to prevent clogging up. He said the flame trap itself can't be removed because it is part of the breathing system. Has my mechanic done the right thing? Is what he says correct?

The flame trap is only found on the non turbo engines. The problem is usually the nickle sized trap that is perforated with many holes. After the oil seperater a small hose leads to the air intake where the trap is located. Removal should not be a problem because should this be clogged a potential for a rear main seal leaking.
