I bought a 99 S70 Base model from a dealer recently for my son to drive. I have a '99 GLT as well. The car has a random acceleration and lunge that occurs about 2x per week. It makes it difficult for a 16 year old to drive.
Dealer cannot replicate the issue on gauges so they won't speculate. They have had the car 4x. I am now working the issue myself in order to hone in on potential causes. I've called Xemodex and Bosch and gotten input but it is mostly about how to approach the dealer.
So far I've heard these responses from technical experts:
1. ETM
2. Idel air control valve
3. clutch solonoid
4. Torque converter
I'm looking for input from your experiences. Thank you in advance

Does this occur while driving or just at idle? How long does it last, momentary, prolonged, until throttle is used? Is car a stick or auto? (clutch solenoid-A/C compressor clutch I'm guessing? Or do they mean Torque Converter Clutch Lock-up solenoid?)Does the car also bog, or just try to accelerate?
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

As a followup, This occurs while driving and more often while slowing down but I have had it lunge at higher speeds. It's a quick burst and its done.
The vehicle is Auto transmission and the input I got was related to the clutch lock-up solenoid. The vehicle does not bog, the engine is spotless and it has an ETM with a white sticker(not yellow as a reference)
228,000 miles. We have had more gauges on it than you can imagine and the dealer cannot replicate the issue. Yet, while I drive a day later the lunging occurs (at slower speeds) and at higher speeds I just feel that the throttle burst out a lunge.
Hope that helps.

As I recall, only from reading here, the White sticker ETM is the original, or early production version, the yellow is preferred, If I'm wrong, I know it will be corrected. Since it is a driving problem, and a surge rather than cutting out, and not an idle surge, I would suspect the ETM, or possibly the pedal sensor as well. Most other systems for fuel or ignition would cause the engine to cut-out.
