130000 miles
My wife drove volvo to work 6 days ago and the "reduced engine performance" message came up. Just prior she said she noticed engine missing. When she pulled over and stopped while in neutral could not get engine to go over 2000 rpm but it did not die.
Towed to shop. They cleaned MAS, said it was dirty. Ran fine for 2 days.
Today it started all over again. Only change is I was able to get it over 2000 rpm before the tow truck took it away back to the shop. According to the mechanic No codes were saved on first visit.
2 years ago the same thing happened at 82000 mi. 2 trips to the shop less then a weak appart. On the second visit they said they found moisture in the area of the MAS. Have not heard from them yet this second visit.
My wife did say the she noted a jerking when the car was cold when leaving work the past few weeks. She thought it was a transmission slipping since it only seemed to happen in the cold. Its been near zero here. The car is garaged at home and it seldom freezes in there.

Do the basic first:
- Air filter
- Spark plugs. BTW, I use NGK Iridium spark plugs.
- Fuel Filter.
I posted the DIYs in forum.
RE: MAF: if you unplug the MAF and the engine runs better, then the MAF may be defective. New Bosch MAF is about $150, very easy to replace.

If the MAF turns out to be the culprit use the Amazon link on the MVS home page to purchase then guide yourself to this: Bosch 0280218088 Air Mass Sensor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004AGESRG/re ... Sub1EBHDEF

I just replaced my old engine (2.5) with an import. Started fine, cleared the airbag message - on my way home the reduced engine performance, anti skid temp off, engine system service required, messages came on as well. One moment I was driving fine next high reffs minamal power..... if I unplug the battery will this clear the messages?

My suggestions are that you look at two areas:
1) the crankshaft position sensor...if it or the crankshaft position sensor mounting bracket gets loose, then the ECM cannot confirm engine speed and it goes into limp mode. See the latest forum instructions for this one.
2) the ETM (electronic throttle module) or the throttle position sensor...after a while, the slide resistor gets worn down and feedback on the throttle position is not smooth. Again, if the ECM gets poor feedback from the ETM, it odes into limp mode.
It is located under the center of the intake manifold and is accessible without too much trouble. See the latest forum instructions for this one.
3) definitely change the fuel filter....perhaps the gas station you use has dirty gas
