2004 S80 Zeroing Tachometer. Tachometer jumped 2K

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2004 S80 Zeroing Tachometer. Tachometer jumped 2K

Post by deedatc »

Hi, my 2004 Volvo S80 had a rough start today in 8 degree F weather. The engine seemed to start, turn off, then start again all within 2 seconds. Once the car started, the message center said "reduced engine performance" so I turned the car off to avoid further harm. That is when I noticed the tachometer was reading 1.8K RPM even when the car was off. The car started and ran fine afterwards, but was off by 1.8K RPM. It seems like the tachometer thinks the zero point is 1.8K RPM.

How would I be able to zero out the tachometer back to its original zero point? Is there a trick to this? Would I be able to pull out the instrument panel, remove the lens, and manually push it back to zero with my fingers? Or is there a different way to do this? Would I damage anything by doing this?

Thank You for reading!
