Was hoping for some input from others please as this has been ongoing! Car refuses to start without cranking it for 5-6 seconds first, then it fires up. This happens regardless whether engine is cold or warm. It wants to start immediately each time upon turning key but never does and just spits but keep it cranking and it WILL start. A couple of codes are present P0507 (high rpm idle / air control system) and P2177 (system lean Off Idle) and the car does have a high/rough idle (1100 rpm) when warm but I do not think this is causing the hard start. If anyone knows different please advise!!
It does have a replacement yellow label Marelli TCM previous owner installed in 2014 but i don't think it's functioning properly because of the high idle and also because it whines for almost two minutes after shutting car off. I hear this whine should last only a few seconds. Maybe new unit was never programmed although the car did get the TCM recall software upgrade in '06.
Meanwhile I have rented a good quality fuel pressure gauge to see if maybe engine is loosing fuel pressure after sitting!? It received a new fuel pump in 2011 according to Volvo records due to that recall as well.

I would check all air intake ducts for cracks and tightness, which could be the cause of that lean code. I'd also do a parameter scan to look for more info, like throttle and pedal position, maf signal, fuel trims.

my 2001 s80 also had same problem: hard starting, after I replaced the fuel pump (in the fuel tank) the problem is gone, before you replace the fuel pump you can try to clean fuel filter first (located below the rear passenger's door). good luck.

Dealer or anyone with VIDA/DiCE setup can test ETM easily. But I'd follow draser's recommendation and check for vacuum leak first. Luckily, N/A engines don't have a long air intake path like turbos have, so it won't take much time.

No vacuum leaks as far as I can tell but will do the starter fluid spray test around the intake areas while engine running (see if engine surges) to be sure. Fuel pressure test checked out @ 55 psi running and 48 psi after half an hour of sitting so all good there.
At 950 rpm, MAF signal reads 22.86 Kg/hr. My scanner reads live data including fuel trim but have no clue what the readings indicate...SHRTFTB1S1 = 2.3, FTB1S2 = 0

Short FT is normal, however I'd expect LongTermFT to be double digit positive, hence the lean code and ecu adding fuel to compensate. Depending on mileage of car injectors may be plugged thus squirting less fuel. When you do the propane test I'd muscle the air ducts and bellows to facilitate a possible leak.

would this also be causing the nasty exhaust fumes smell the car puts out when running? Perhaps its over compensating because the fumes are undoubtedly unburned gases and the smell stays with car hours after its parked in the garage. Cant imagine a bad catalytic converter after only 121k miles

How's your pcv system, slight suction when removing oil cap (glove test)? Running lean combined with other high mileage engine issues may lead to burned exhaust valve. How's your long term FT?

PCV was checked and looked clear (trap box and holes) when I did the head gasket job a couple months back. Also removed and clean up all the valves with grinding compound. LongFT1 (%) reads 0.0. Is this not normal?

LTFT is very good, unless you cleared the ecu. It shows no air leaks, fuel delivery good, maf good, ignition good. I'd follow vtl recommendation to test ETM. Also, one of the members, quietcoolone, posted a parameter set of his car which was a N/A just like yours. I'd compare his param's to yours.
