97 Volvo Wagon Knocking noise from front wheel

Post by Hinano1 »

Hi, have a noise that started all of a sudden. its a regular knock knock that increases as I speed up. I have noticed a similar noise at low speed like a vibration when I turn the wheel left. It seems to Change and reduce vibration when I turn the opposite direction. Th sound is getting worse and I have no idea. I recently changed the front pads. Any Ideas before I pull apart the the whole assembly?

Help .. Frustrated Aussie

Have you checked to see if you have a broken CV boot?

Thanks Mate,

The CV boot looks intact but I will have another look. TIf I take the Wheel off the Rotor disk moves like the beering is loose.

Well, I was going to mention that if it's not the boot it could be a bad bearing and then you mentioned it instead. try www.fcpgroton.com for decent prices on replacement wheel hub assemblies. Specifically, here's the page: http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo850driveline.htm
Good luck!

P.S. Oops...you're in Australia. You might try these guys...they might know a decent parts place there. http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/

Try ASV at Woodville Rd Villawood, they sell used and new, bit of a strange mob to deal with but their prices are ok, you can email them for an online quote or ring them or just front up, that part won't be cheap though.

For comparison purposes, a wheel hub here in the U.S. from an on-line store or even eBay runs a bit over U.S. $100 (plus shipping). Labor shouldn't be that difficult. If you want to do it yourself, make sure you get all rust and debris out with a wire brush after taking the old off and installing the new. Personally I would do both sides at once, but not really necessary.
