1996 850 GLT Wagon Non Turbo Struts and Alignment

Post by Aduzi »

Had Monroe struts put on, new control arm/ball joint, rear shocks and alignment bolts. Have ended up with a ride that shimmies or bounces, car pulls to left. New tires on front. People who aligned and put tires on switched tires from side to side and also spun balanced all four tires again. Car still pulls left from time to time on flat straight road and vibrates something awful at all speeds but especially high speeds. Am taking car back in today, Any thoughts? Please help, Thank you.

If the car did not have these issues before and now it does I would review the parts and installation of these parts. In particular the two bolts securing the strut to hub, three nuts on top of strut tower, ball joint bolt that goes thru hub securing ball joint and control arm bolts. BTW you did not mention the tie rod ends. Are these in serviceable condition?

Were the spring seats replaced when the struts were done? They are a very high failure item and should be replaced with the new updated XC90 type seat.

Presumably you replaced the control arms because of bushing failure or ball joint wear. New control arms are going to ride stiffer than old failing ones, but they will limber up in a week or so to the point of not feeling so bouncy. It's pretty cold up in PA, so that also makes those new bushings stiff.

As far as the vibration, I'm with kahl--it sounds like some problem with the installation of the new parts.

If you replaced all the other components and not the spring seats then you are going to end up stressing the weakest component (read oldest here) to the point where it will begin to show signs of failure. This, or shoddy workmanship, IMHO is the most likely source of your trouble.
