So my mechanic tells me the underbody leak is a leaking transmission pan and that I have two options: 1) continue to drive with it as is since the leak is minuscule or 2) fix the leak, which he said would probably involve replacing the pan since it appears to be "very rusty."

I did a quick search on the forum and cannot find a single reference to a leaking transmission pan. Does the diagnosis sound accurate? I trust my mechanic, but he would admit that he is not a Volvo specialist and said he has never replaced a transmission pan but believes it may be necessary to drop the subframe to do so. Anybody have any insights on this? Thanks.

You don't have a transmission pan. I've never even seen anything rust underneath except for the ac accumulator and suspension components.
