2001 S60 2.4t random loss of power

Post by the65dartguy1 »

My wife was driving the car Thursday and called me saying the car was lurching, having difficulty making power and was slow to brake. The "engine system service required" & "urgent engine system service" messages came up on the info display. No CEL. She pulled the car over and called at tow truck. I drove out to meet her and the car started right up, both messages still present. Had the car towed home. The next day it started fine, only the "engine system service required" message present. I drove it around about 5-10 miles, just fine, no issues. Took it to work today, again, no issues. The same message is still present, but to be honest has been on and off since we bought the car last year.
My thinking is a faulty ETM at first, but now I'm not sure. This car is on its second ETM currently & its a whit label. It was my understanding that any car repaired at the dealership would receive the yellow label ETM.
Any thoughts/ ideas/ concerns would be greatly appreciated.

Read out your OBD codes and then clear. Let's see what comes back.

How many miles are on the beast? ETBs last >100k so I doubt you need another one unless this is a real high mileage car

I did read the OBD, forgot to mention that. It gave me code P0422, which is a cat code and I have had it come and go over the last year. It was prevalent when we first purchased the car last summer. I put a new rear O2 sensor and it has been away for the most part since. (it will come on and clear itself in the winter months) Anyways, that was the only code I got.
Car has 87xxx miles on it currently. Purchased it from original owners (with a massive stack of paperwork) with 76k last June.

In the first message, you mention the brakes also didn't work properly?

There was a recall with this car, the fuel pressure sensor did cause occasionally a loss of power; was it replaced?

Yes, she had mentioned that it took a longer time to stop. I explained to her that id she was losing power, she was probably not getting the vacuum needed to make the power booster work sufficiently. I have not experienced the car as being difficult to brake.

As for the fuel pressure sensor, I was completely unaware of it. Do you have a good source of info for me so I can read up more on it?

I have a Volvo S80 same engine and i had have the same problem ( code P0422) it could be :

1) Bad fuel cap seal or damaged filler neck- It will cause the vacuum lose,
2) Evaporation system hoses damaged (especially j-hose) - it will cause vacuum lose,
3) Bad purge valve
4) Bad O2 sensors a.k.a lambda sensors- it will cause bad mixture of air-fuel and loose of power

There should be freeze frame data associated with this code, that will also show what's going on at the time of the fault. Can you read that with your scanner? Is loss of power corelating with code?

My code reader is rather basic, I will see if it can provide the info you seek. The code is spurious to the power loss issue however. At least I believe it to be, as it has been transient for the entire time I have had the car, and looking back at the POs documentation, was present when he had it for some time too. Interestingly enough, the shop doing the work for him elected to replace the cat conv. without having changed out the O2 sensors first.
I believe that there is a vacuum leak someplace under the hood that is changing the A/F ratio and popping this code. Just haven't found it yet.

Good point on air leak, that will trip the second sensor and generate code. I would check the exhaust piping at the flanges for leaks. Same for the intake side and turbo ducts for the loss of power.

So I just took the car for lunch and I noticed something else. Upon releasing my foot from the brake, I can hear air hissing out around the pedal. Does anybody think that this vacuum loss could be enough to trigger the issue above??
Seems like a long shot, but they are at least (admittedly remotely) related....
