1998 S70 T5 New S70 owner with a lot of questions

Post by V_T5 »

What's up everybody? New volvo 1998 s70 owner here and I have a lot of questions. I am going to keep them all here instead of starting multiple threads.
First off, I believe the car is a t5, but the previous owner must have changed the wheels since they are 15", and it even gives specs inside the fuel door about 15" wheels. I thought the t5 only comes with 16" wheels.. There is no spec sticker on the passenger side of the engine, but the one under the hood above the coolant tank says it's a 2.3 as a t5 should be

Also, the 6th and 7th digits in the vin are 53. From what information I have gathered is that 53 means t5. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a few dash switch lights out and one on the cluster, I wanted to change them to red/orange and get of the old man green lights. I know its possible, but will it also change the green rectangular box where the miles show on the dash?

Another thing I found was a disconnected line or hose. It looks like a small hard plastic hose. It runs from near the hood latch(passenger side) towards the turbo and ends there at a black rubber 90°bend

Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the site!
You definitely seem to have a turbo based on the B5234T designation on the sticker, with T = turbo. The displacement is 2319 cc.
The purple line runs to the "SAS" valve or Secondary Air System. This is a valve that controls the injection of air from the air pump to the exhaust system to help the catalytic converter warm up and burn off excess hydrocarbons and reduce emission from the engine. You can replace the little rubber elbow with a new one, but I've found that a short section of silicone tubing with a similar inside diameter will work as well and may last longer and be less expensive.
There is some background info here that may be of use:

Thanks for the reply! It is turbo based, but is it indeed a t5? The vin decoder says it's a t5, so I assume it's safe to say it is.

As for the SAS, I will be looking into deleting that whole system as it is not necessary and there is no inspection where I live. I deleted he SAI(audi version of volvo SAS), entire EVAP, and PCV sytem on my audis, and I'm hoping to do the same on this volvo. it cleans up the engine bay a little, makes things easier to work on, and less of a chance for parts to become faulty. I look forward to getting to know this car a little better.

If they have a turbo at all then technically they are a "T5" (turbo 5 cylinder) although the common usage of the term is reserved for the high pressure turbo versions. The 15" wheels are odd though, not that they are on the car since you can swap between 15" and 16", but that it is on the gas door. The 5234T is the high pressure version.

I wonder if the gas door got replaced? It is not uncommon for the motor on the gas door to crap out and in desperation people go after it with a screwdriver to get it open. A trip to the junk yard later they have a new door. I tried to open the gas door on my '98 in the driveway to see what it says but the battery is dead and I think I will recharge the battery rather than pry it open - the transmission is out on that one and I haven't fixed it yet.

@Ozark Lee, the wheels and the info listed inside the fuel door is what throws me off. Like you said though, the fuel door could have been replaced, as for the wheels, one of the 1st 2 owners could have had them on there. I bought the car from a 72yr old man, so theres no telling what happened to the 16" wheels if he did have them on at one point. Its possible he had 2 sets of wheels, one for summer tires and one with winter tires. Who knows at this point.

I stuck a battery charger on the S70 T5 and opened the fuel door. Indeed it calls for 205 55 SR 16 tires on the label.

Yes a 53 is a T5
Yes the tires are/were 205/55/16
Some owners changed to 15s for a smoother riding (and cheaper tires to buy) car
These cars like 215/45/17s even better!

I want to get some wheels and coilovers, will probably go with 18s, 17s seem to small on this car for me.

would a compression test be of any value? I assume static compression on a T5 is 8.5ish (HPT) and the yield should be lower than a GLT/NA motor (LPT/N/A) with static compression of 10.5 ish.

Or, if you can drive and determine the approximate power band of the motor, GLT should be from off-idle where the T5 builds steam higher in the rev range.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
