Hi: I'm new to the site, I have a couple questions that may be answered elsewhere, but a quick look revealed no answer. 1). Is cylinder number 1 is on the front (far right) of the engine, or are the cyl numbers staggered? 2). I need to lift the engine just a little, just enough to assist in removing the old and re-installing a new timing belt, lift will be about an inch or so, - is the location of the engine support bar (for jack position), just the front edge of the oil pan (using a 2 x 4 crosspiece), or is there another location to lift the engine, also is it necessary to loosen the engine mounts before lifting. One more quick question, has anyone found a better spark plug than the Bosch?
Thanks for your help.

1. Cylinder 1 is where timing belt is.
2. You need to remove 2 bolts from right engine mount, which hold engine to the mount.
3. Bosch produces tons of different spark plugs, which one are you talking about? FR7DPP+ works well for me.

I just did timing belt and front cam seals on my 03 XC70 and didn't have to lift the engine. Not sure if you're doing other stuff but just for timing belt that shouldn't be necessary. Maybe replacing pump or pulley to get tools in there but should be able to get to it without lifting the motor.
I couldn't get my aux belt pulley off, but on other users recommendation I took off a small cover, located behind the aux belt pulley and in front of crank. I'd do the cover again unless I need to access the main seal for some reason. Make note of how you got belt off and slide back on same way, some cut but they you wouldn't know how it came out under the crank pulley.

Once marks are aligned MAKE YOUR OWN MARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The scribed marks on the cam pulleys are rarely perfectly aligned with the notches under the top belt case cover. When you go back together you'll be confused as to whether the mark was 1/2 tooth left or 1/2 tooth right of the top cover notch.
Remove the lower belt bottom cover as recommended. The crank pulley does not need to come off. The belt has to come around the oil pressure relief valve that is below crank but it is no more difficult than flossing molars.

Good point. Also I think you have VVT (big knobs) on the cam pulleys, instructions from Volvo says to go 90 degree past marks and back to align. This release the tension in the VVT's (I think I read somewhere). If you do not do this I've heard the pulleys will go off mark counter clockwise and you have to turn them back to mark before putting belt back on. I'm not certain about that part as I did the 90 and it stayed right on mark until I locked cams (something that's not necessary for belt only).
I repainted my timing mark, drew line across belt and transferred those marks to new belt. I also marked motor side so imagine a line going from timing mark outside, over belt to motor, seemed easier than doing the cover but was really helpful with the cam pulleys. I'm by no means an expert on this but didn't get check engine so figured I did it right or got lucky.
