Different tire size in front & rear will it work?

Post by nitink »

I have purchased a used 16" rim set. The tire on them in front is 205/40/16 and in rear is 205/55/16. Rear tires are about 2.5" bigger than front.
Can any one please suggest if I can use this configuration of different front & rear size tires, or will it damage suspension.

Don't see how it would damage anything unless you have AWD and you don't. Fronts are the same size and although different, rears are the same. Strange, yes, but damaging, no. Now if the fronts or rears were different sizes L and R, then it could cause suspension issues.

Not a great idea, but it won't damage anything. The front and rear tires turn independently. The front tires have to be the same size, but other than that it won't damage anything. Handling might be a little "funky". I wouldn't do any aggressive driving.

It might mess with the car's ABS computer. Wheels will appear to be going different speeds.

I don't know how such a scenario would play out, i.e.: if it would trigger ABS braking whenever you brake, the ABS light on the dash, or both.

Not a great idea, in fact on a FWD car, if anything, the FRONTS should be bigger

Ok I won't try this stunt.
I got rims with different tires mounted on them, and wasn't looking to spend money on tires. I will just bite the bullet and buy 2 new tires of 205/40/16.

No no NO !!!
NOT 205/40/16 completely the wrong size
Stock is 203'55'16 you can go lower with 205/50 16
I've never heard of a 205/40/16 anyway, does anyone even make this weird size?

No, no....205/55/16...not 203.
Actually, it was originally 205/50/16 on the 850 turbo's (with Columba's) but too many bent rims with the low profile tires and so Volvo changed it to the 55 size.

Of course 205, typo, there is no 203. Do you have to comment on EVERYTHING obvious?
...and he obviously wants a LOW profile
