any 850 What kind of jack do you carry?

Post by JimBee »

Is there a better more compact and maybe safer jack than the OEM? I had to use mine once on a surface that wasn't real flat and firm. I got the spare on but it was scary.

Every jack than factory jack which our cars have is better and safer.

I carry a trolley jack in the boot, would never use the factory jack as the sole time I used that in my driveway to change a tyre, it bent!

Better to have the best option as no point going for the most compact if it isn't safe when needed.

The 1995 850 had a jack recall. (info here http://www.motortrend.com/cars/1995/volvo/850/recalls/) nonetheless the design is not the best in the first place.

I try to keep a cheap, crappy, small floor jack (Buffalo brand I think) in the trunk but I have more cars than jacks. For any kind of road trip a jack and a 4-way lug wrench goes in first. A bottle jack would actually be more convenient but the last time I tried to use one it wouldn't fit under the car with a flat tire.

Which ever vehicle I take, this light weight aluminum floor jack comes with. Regardless, and in spite of the OEM jack.
It is low profile, mostly aluminum, and quick pump. The pole is foam covered in the lower area, and breaks down into two pieces.
About $70. on sale.

I was lost on this thread until Roberts post. The 1999 jack is great.

I also have that Pittsburg floor jack like ben850, which also rocks....or doesn't rock.

I have a 99 with the sort of half-scissor jack and I had to use it for the first time yesterday. Hated it. Is there another jack I'm not aware of that I should have?

Also, I snapped the lug wrench in half trying to loosen a stuck nut....after loosening the other four. Boy, that was not a fun couple of hours. Not going anywhere without a socket set and breaker bar ever again.

ben850, how do you get the handle from popping out of the jack? Did you cut a hole and use a nut/bolt? My handle is always popping off
