I recently purchased a 2002 s60, and I'm planning on spending the next few months repairing/replacing all of the key systems, as both a means of tuning up a used car purchase, and teaching/preparing myself for owning this car for the next 10 years or so.
However, I don't want to go out and spend $3,000 on tools and parts over a single weekend. I'm looking for an economical, practical way to go about sequencing a complete tune up.
Keeping in mind I'm a newby when it comes to car maintenance, here's my plan so far:
1. Take the car in to a paintless dent repair shop and get the few dings out
2. Wash, polish, wax the car
3. Go through this video series one clip at a time and basically replicate what this guy is doing. Try to replicate one or two clips per weekend. https://www.youtube.com/user/fcpgroton/search?query=s60
Other than general advice, I'm wondering:
1. Are there any basic maintenance/repair procedures he leaves out? What should I include?
2. What order should I tackle all of these things in? (What replacement/maintenance procedure should I schedule first? What should I schedule last?)
3. Aside from tools and items used in those videos, what should I purchase ahead of time, so I'm not standing in the middle of a driveway with a car I can't put back together or repair properly.
4. Can you recommend a way to go about doing this economically, or to at least stagger the expenses?

The thing I would emphasys the most is to only do the necessary repairs. For the parts, read on forums as there are many non original parts that don't last.
I would start with the basic tools. A 3/8 ratchet and a good set of 3/8" Allen keys. A 1/2 ratchet is needed for the sub-frame and control arm bolts. A 2' electrical tube 3/4" dia. is a great ratchet extension when releasing the bigger bolts. A 2 ton jack stand is mandatory when working under the car - to be placed under solid chassis points. A hydraulic jack will help rise the car faster.
