I have recently completed a head gasket replacement, on my 95 850 2.3 turbo and the engine will still not fire. The car sat for a year in various stages of diassembly.
This is the list of everything else i did as well
Crank sensor
Cam sensor
Ignition coil(MSD)
Plugs(Bosch)
Wires(IPD)
Cap
Turbo clean (disassemble and reassemble)
Throttle body clean (disassemble & reassemble)
Pcv system
Vacuum line replacement
Fuel tank drain
Fuel filter
Fuel injectors( 6 mos prior to head gasket blow)
Oil pump gaskets
I set the timing with no cam gears from the back of the cam. And the crank timing gear mark with the oilpump mark. So i believe the timing is correct. My concern is the mark on the serpentine crank pully does not line up and that I possibly misunderstood which mark to use lining up the crank. Which would put the timing out about a 1\8 rotation.
I also have considered that just because the fuel tank had not gone gooey that possibly the injectors have, hence the "wants to fire " feel. Though i dont know how to check that theory.
I have fuel to the injector rail. I have fire to the plugs
My obdII reader is reading a transmission position sensor code and a throttle position sensor code. I replace the P N unit about 2 years ago and that code was still there after i did it. I think the throttle position sensor is a new code. I have tested the throttle position sensor with a multimeter and it reads from .6 to 4.4 volts by accuating the throttle.
I am at the end of my diagnostic knowledge. I would be very appreciative of any advice and assistance you may be able to offer.
If i know whats broke i can generally fix it.... but when i have no idea then it really wears on me.

How is the compression? check this recent thread:

I'm not following completely about the timing marks: are you now certain it is properly timed, or do you need info for how to determine that?

Also, how many times have you cranked it over with the starter? Did you turn the motor by hand first to ensure valve clearance before cranking? If you turn the motor over (plugs removed) with a wrench on the crank pulley bolt, does it turn smoothly, or is there binding? Maybe you just need some oil in the cylinders. (see Lawnmower)

Yeah, that thread I linked is about lawnmower syndrome, that's also why I asked about compression.

If you changed the ignition wires as a part of this project make sure they are in the correct distributor locations. The Haynes manual has them wrong if that is what you used for a guide.

I am not positive of proper timing at the crank. The timing belt pully and the serpentine belt pulley bith have marks on them . I used the mark on the timing belt pulley to line up with the mark on the oil pump.
I did crank the engine by hand before using the starter, it does turn freely with no problems.
I have not checked compression, i do not havd a compression guage.
It is funny you mention the haynes manual being wrong. I do think i used that. But i also remember questioning it . Do you have a correct source for firing order?

Ok , so another spark of hope goes out, no pun intended. I have the correct firing order. The oem distributor cap cover has the firing order on it so i had followed that instead of the haynes.
The last vestige of hope is that i used the wrong timing mark at the crank. Should i have used the mark on the serpentine belt pulley or on the timing belt pulley

The mark on the crankshaft is very, very small and it is at the back of the sprocket. There are two versions of the mark. The single mark at the bottom of the valley in the sprocket and the two mark version that has two small notches on adjacent ridges.
This is the single notch version:
This is the two notch version:
In both cases the the mark on the oil pump lines up at the center of the valley, either at the mark or between the marks depending on which sprocket you have.
Any other marks on the serpentine belt pulley are meaningless with regard to timing.

It sounds like you got the timing marks right but maybe not, curious to know once you see the pics Lee posted.
You could consider "renting" a compression gauge from Autozone or similar for free. Or just try the fix, it is basically free, can;t hurt to try (dry out the cylinders, 1 teaspoon of oil in each, crank until it starts).
