2002 s80 non turbo won't start

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2002 s80 non turbo won't start

Post by scowndrel »

My mom gave my sister her 2002 Volvo s80 2.9 non-turbo sedan (158k) last year after driving it for about a decade and it's been a great car with the exception of a break down last weekend. Basically, as she was driving down the freeway, the car started sputtering and eventually lost all power. She managed to get it started again, but it would not exceed about 20mph even at WOT. After getting the car towed to the local Volvo dealership and tested the following monday, the dealership found:

"Multiple codes stored ECM1000, ECM130A, ECM3503, ECM3523, ECM3533, ECM982A. Per fault tracing, found throttle module failing, recommend ETA with new pin corrector"

The dealer wanted $1300 for repairs which I thought was absurd, so I decided to fix it myself. We found an OEM replacement on Amazon (you guessed it, 0280750131) and I had it installed in the car within 5 minutes. Now it's important to note that this car does NOT have the infamous Magneti Marelli throttle body (so please don't go there!). To nobody's surprise, the car exhibited the exact same symptoms with the replacement; it cranks and sounds like it wants to start, but never fires off. As we all know, a car needs three things to run: fuel, air, and spark. I can smell fuel in the engine compartment after failed starting attempts and all the spark plugs look like they're in working order, but I'm not sure how to confirm if we're actually getting spark. Additionally, when turning the ignition to the 'on' position you can hear the fuel pump engage and injection system build up pressure.

After researching the engine codes further and fishing through my mom's service records, I decided that the coil packs could be at fault and replaced the two that the codes identified; again, no success. Fortunately, the parts retailer gave us a refund, so we weren't out any money there. This morning I confirmed all of the fuses are in working order, so we can eliminate them as a culprit. At this point, the remaining codes appear to be pointing to a faulty ECM, but I really don't want to continue replacing parts willy-nilly hoping the issue dissipates. Also, my mom had the same dealer replace her water pump and timing belt a few years back, so I feel fairly certain it's not a timing issue, but I could be wrong.

One question I have is that the Amazon listing and buyers of the replacement TB have all said they did not need to re-program the aftermarket throttle body and all the forum postings I've located instruct you turn the ignition to the On position for 40 seconds to basically set the new throttle body auto-magically. However, idpusa (http://www.ipdusa.com/products/10840/12 ... ody-module) says that it must be programmed by a dealership or mechanic; which is it?! Am I going down a rabbit hole here? Is it something completely out of left field like a plugged cat, or MAF sensor? Did the dealer just assume that it was an early 2002 model with the bad TB? I've been scanning the web for days and would love to come to my sister's rescue with a fix! Anybody!?

might sound silly, but how about the fuel filter?

Thanks for the suggestion, but if the filter was plugged, I'm pretty sure the plugs wouldn't be soaking wet...

This is a common problem with volvo even some dealers cant fix the problem what you have is your power cable from the hub close to the fuse box to the starter creating a magneit field the insullation breakers down with age it runs right above the crank sensor cuting off the crank sensor signal redirect a new power cable awaw from the crank sensor i redirected mine along the fender past the rad and back to the stsrter sounds like dora the explorer
