New to Forum - 2002 Volvo S60

Post by SilverS60 »

Hi Everyone..

I previously owned a Honda del Sol VTEC, which lasted me 180,000 miles. I am about to graduate college, and have secured a job as state bank examiner. The job requires that I drive many miles yearly, and I wanted something comfortable.

The car was a leased car with 59,000 miles. It is loaded with most features except the turbo. It has leather, heated seats, sunroof, opt 16inch wheels. I love the seats the most...very comfortable. I paid 13,500 for it. (USD) Does that sound about right?

I have always worked on my own cars myself, never taking it to the dealer. The engine in my car went out at 160K on my honda, I ordered a slightly used engine, had it in 4 days, and put it in myself. I am pretty sure the Volvo will not be as easy to work on as the Honda.

This past weekend I installed a inline converter off the back speakers, installing my a subwoofer. Now I have the lows that the car seemed to be lacking. I do not believe my car has a speaker in the center channel spot in the dash, but I could be wrong. The stereo is a 603 I believe... No cd changer either....never used it in my old car.

The tires are brand new potenzas... seem to ride nice, I believe I read that the S60 is known for being tough on tires, and the potenzas wear fast.

I see the car uses oil filter cartridges...similar to my old motorcycle. I saw where you can buy a case of them for around 49 dollars...(10 filters). Definately something I would want to do so I have plenty. I was told I would be driving 30-50K miles a year. Most likely I will have this car a year and a half before I find something else. Reliability will be a must.

I have read information about the ETM failing? Is this something I should have checked out immediately? I believe my car is the year and model that is faulty. (I have been lurking in the forums for a few days)

If anyone has any information they'd like to share with me about care for my Volvo, I would love to know. I was going to go to the auto store to pick up the Lexol cleaner and conditioner for the seats. The seats are in great shape...very thick leather.

I look forward to being a part of this forum...

Welcome!

I don't have any experience with S60s, so I can't comment directly. My 850 has drop-in style air filter, and I can find replacements everywhere. Not a problem there.

My 850 is also about 10x easier to change the oil on than my wife's Honda Civic, if that makes a difference.

Please keep us up to date with your ownership experiences. I'm very interested in what you think about your Volvo.

OK - already had a problem with the car..

I stopped the car, got out, with my keys, and locked it. 45 minutes goes by and I return to the car. I hear a fan running. I unlock the car, get in...and the fan inside the car is running... Anyone ever have this happen? It isn't doing it now.

Thanks

I just traded in my 2002 S60 and it did the same think after I bought it new. Found out it is normal. Freaked me out at first. I have a 2004 S60 my daughter drives and I just got a 2006 S60 and neither of these cars do that.

I don't remember why the fan goes like that but I do remember the service dept telling me it was normal. I had the car 4 years and it never caused a problem and I got used to it.

I would think that was what you're seeing. Might be worth a call to a Volvo dealer. Congratulations on your new Volvo. I've been driving them since 1988 and have had several. I'm on my 7th one. I can tell you it's very important to keep these cars properly serviced. I have always followed the Volvo service plan by the book. If you don't you will pay later.

Sounds like you can do a lot yourself which is a plus. I've never found a car with more comfortable seats, they're like furniture and far surpass most other cars or SUVs.

Hope that helps.

WAH
