2001 S80 lacks power until warm

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2001 S80 lacks power until warm

Post by mndave »

So I have looked around different forums and have done what I can in town to figure this out. But, no luck so far.

Daughter has a 2001 S80 2.9 non turbo. Starts fine, may even take off normally. But then it shuts down, goes into a limp mode. (10-15 mph). Once in a while it wants to kick in and take off but is just kidding and slows down. It will do this until the engine is warm. Then it runs "fine". Normal power about 95% of the time. It will occasionally lose power but will normally recover fairly quickly. On a couple of test drives though it did not and stayed in limp mode, after it went into it's normal, "hey I can go regular speed", mode.

No codes. I have replaced the MAF sensor, no difference. I removed the ETB (yellow label)and cleaned that, it was nasty. Followed directions I found on this site. No difference.

Nearest Volvo dealer is about 80 miles away. As expected, they are not big into diagnosing over the phone. Not ready to tow to dealer and I'm definitely not ready to potentially stick $1300 into this with the known ETB issues to replace.

My goal is to get my daughter a reliable car for school. She is driving my wife's now. This has been a good car for her and we feel she is very safe driving this, the mechanical trust issues are creeping into my thoughts though.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thought about that. Doesn't show same symptoms as I have found online. But not doubting it needs to be done. It seems to do the opposite of the other etm posts I have read about as it tends to run better as it warms up. Maybe I'm misreading them.

Thanks though.

What have you found to be the problem?
I have a 2000 s80 turbo with similar problem. Forum posts have suggested coolant temperature sensor but that hasn't made a difference.
