2002 V70 2.4t Timing alignment???

Post by bonosall »

I have two Volvos that I have been working on. My 2001 S60 T5 and a 2002 V70 2.4t. Both needed timing belts replaced due to both having 110k miles. I tore into the S60 and replaced the belt, tentioners and the waterpump while I was in there. The exhaust cam rotated a tooth, but I moved it back while installing and it fired right up and runs without issue. Total time for job was about 1.5 hours.

The V70 is a non turbo and so I ripped into it the same day I did the S60. Assuming that all was the same, or at least nearly so, we tried to remove the crank nut. This proved to be almost impossible. After an hour or so with the impact driver and using the starter to loosen the cheater bar wrench, we realized that the 2.4 has the two bolts that hold the inspection cover at the side of the crank pulley. We left the nut alone and removed the access panel. After aligning the crank timing mark, block pointer between the two nitched teeth on the pulley, we noticed the cam alignment marks seemed to be at the three o'clock position instead of the 12 o'clock position. We assumed this was due to using the impact driver for an hour. Anyway, we took the old belt off and popped the cap off the back of the cams. We installed the cam alignment tool on the rear of the cams and verified the crank was lined up right. We rotated the intake cam (the one with the VVT hub on it) clockwise in the direction of rotation so the mark would be in the 12 o'clock position. We put the belt on and tentioned it up. We then tried to start the car and it will not start. I have searched the forum and youtube for answers and nothing seems to work. We have taken the belt off 50 or so times. We have adjusted the outside ring of the intake cam forward and back a tooth on the VVT hub to see if it just needs to be advanced or retarded. We can get it to fire up and run with a little gas, but it clicks a bit and runs like crap. Knowing the clicking is probably a valve to piston click, I do not want to run it.

Sorry this is so long, but I have done a few of these before and this one is kicking my butt. Any suggestions or help would be great.

Also, anyone know why my S60 T5 (2.3 turbo) would have the VVT on the exhaust cam while the V70 2.4t Non-Turbo would have it on the Intake cam? Is there a difference and could the previous owner have installed something wrong?
