2004 V70 Starter Solenoid clicks, eventually starts

Post by Faust »

I have been having a starting problem for the last few days. 70% of the time I try to start my car, the solenoid clicks, like a dead battery. After several tries, the starter engages and the car starts. It doesn't seem to start as rapidly as usual (electrical drain from starter?). Doesn't seem to matter, hot or cold. I had the battery checked at Auto Zone and Advance. Both said it was low, but within normal limits. I took it by my normal service guy, he recommended checking the stater connection for corrosion. Looking at it, it appears fine; but I will try that when the motor cools down.

Can't see a connection, but my clock now displays dashes, rather than time. I am throwing this in because it failed about the same time as the starter problem began

Although my knowledge of the flow of electrons is limited, it was simple. After the first click of the morning, I hooked up my battery charger and set it to "start". Car spun right over and started. I took it back to Advance and found another "technician". This time their test device clearly read "Replace Battery". I did, all is well. I did feel a little gouged at $150.00.

$150 isn't terrible for a battery from advance auto - i had the same problem last time i needed a battery, they told me to buy a new one. i ended up going home, finding a advance auto part coupon online, bought the battery they told me to buy online with in-store pickup as my delivery option, and ended up saving about 20% (or $30) in the long run. felt like i got a good deal.

the question is, did it fix the Problem? if not, i would start checking cabling for split starter cables and even cables around the fuse box to make sure there's not problems with grounding and other issues that have to do with any cables going to and from the starter.

Yes, new battery seems to fixed everything. I thought about going home and buying it online. But, I had dragged along all of the old batteries I had in the barn and got $5.00 each for them. I ended up paying just over $130.00. In retrospect, I should have done both. I'll never be rich.
